seagull poem redux

desolation (seagull poem 2).

it was the hour of the wolf, and the night swallowed the sound of my footsteps.
half-insensible with grief, i hardly knew or cared where i was.

suddenly a pattern matched; the world fell in around me.
a different story uncurled itself from the space between one step and the next.

i stood frozen as the memory claimed my senses:
the winter air; the white birds wheeling, flashing like glitter in the blue snowglobe sky.
for a long moment it seemed the next step must complete that movement;
i must pass, as through a doorway, from this shadowed street to that bright one.

i saw the brightness though i stood in night --
it seemed the birds were real, and i the shadow, a creature watching them from the wrong time.
for a moment i forgot the pain of loneliness,
as if the sea-birds' cries once again lifted me out of myself.

but my foot came down on the same street: no doorway.
even as i turned in wonder, the memory came unaligned.

behind me the world was ordinary, unchanged.
the bare limbs of the tree reached wearily into a sky devoid of birds.

Lovely, though when I was reading it on the page, I confess that I preferred my original interpretation of "sex-birds" to "sea birds." :)
